The Sylvan Lake Dam was constructed in 1837 by the State of Indiana as a feeder dam for a canal system. In 1993, severe sloughing problems were observed and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources took emergency actions to stabilize the embankment and to lower the reservoir.

Lawson-Fisher Associates was then retained to analyze the project, recommend a course of action, design all improvements and provide construction related services.

Upon evaluating various alternatives, the project scope was defined to include the following:

  • Reconstruction of the embankment.

  • Installation of a toe drain.

  • Construction of both a new principal spillway and a new emergency spillway.

The $5 million project was completed in July, 1996.
